Department Admission Requirements

General requirements
The Department of English admits candidates for two sets of programmes:
The 4 Year B. A. (Hons.) Degree Programme
For the four-year B. A. degree programme, candidates are admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Such candidates have to take and pass at a minimum of credit level in three compulsory subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English. In addition, they are required to take any one arts or one social science subject. Cut-off marks for admission vary slightly from year to year depending on general performance though a minimum score of about 180 out of 400 has remained the National cut-off mark. The qualified candidates have to undergo the university screening exercise, as evolved by the senate of the University.
The 3 Year B. A. (Hons.) Degree Programme
For the three-year Direct Entry (DE) Programme, candidates for admission into the Department of English are generally selected on the basis of their Advanced Level (A/L) results, though sometimes equivalent qualifications such as relevant Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), related Diploma Certificates and others are also considered on merit.
Specific Requirements
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Candidates
UTME candidates must pass, at credit level, at least 5 subjects at Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) General Certificate in Education Examination (GCE) or the National Examination Council (NECO) Ordinary Level (O/L). The five subjects must include the English Language and Literature in English.
Direct Entry (DE) Candidates
DE candidates must score a minimum of 9 points which may be from two of three GCE (A/L) subjects (or the equivalents, such as relevant NCE or Diploma subjects). One of the subjects to be passed at the GCE (A/L) must be Literature in English.
